Batteries are the key element for the success of electrified drive trains. For batteries to be suitable for widespread mobile use, they need to become more powerful and durable, safer, and more cost-effective. At the same time, stationary batteries can also play a part in helping to integrate renewables into our overall energy system.

The characteristics of a battery system result from the interplay between the battery cells and a battery management system. Much of the production process is devoted to building the battery cell. The initial aim of the research funding is to put the scientific basis in place for battery cells made in Germany via improved materials, components and manufacturing methods. In a further step, optimised power electronics in the battery management system help to optimise the use of the cells in the specific application and to adapt them to the requirements in terms of the quantity of energy, charging time and ageing without any safety/security losses. .
