On 9 April, Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy Peter Altmaier met with the UK’s Chancellor of the Exchequer Philip Hammond for talks about current economic policy issues.

Minister Altmaier said: “The UK is a highly valued partner for Germany and one of our most important trading partners. Today, both of us have made it very clear that we want to maintain close economic ties. This means that we need a smart post-Brexit trade deal between the EU and the UK. The European Commission is currently engaged in talks with the UK about this. My colleague Mr Hammond and I have agreed to continue to work closely together and to maintain our good contacts.”

The UK is Germany’s fifth most important trading partner, with bilateral trade amounting to €121.5 billion per year.
