Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy Peter Altmaier today met for the first time with John Kerry, the U.S. Special Presidential Envoy for Climate, who was appointed by U.S. President Joe Biden shortly after taking office. Minister Altmaier and U.S. Climate Envoy Kerry discussed ways in which Germany and the U.S. can work closely together on the international stage to boost the fight against climate change and to accelerate the global energy transition. The U.S. and Germany are also striving for close bilateral cooperation in this area in the future.

The next meeting between Minister Altmaier and Secretary Kerry will take place online as part of the seventh Berlin Energy Transition Dialogue (BETD) on 16 March. John Kerry will give a keynote address and join a panel discussion with Minister Altmaier to explore the opportunities for new transatlantic cooperation on the energy transition. Further panellists include the Canadian Environment Minister Seamus O'Regan, Italian Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio and EU Energy Commissioner Kadri Simson.
