This Tuesday, the management of Plattform Industrie 4.0 met for a virtual meeting at Hannover Messe. The platform brings together representatives from the business community, associations, academia and the trade unions. The meeting was chaired by Dr Ulrich Nußbaum, State Secretary at the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy, and Dr Michael Meister, Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.

Coming together at the same place where the term Industrie 4.0 was coined ten years ago, the Council used the anniversary to take stock of the progress on the implementation of Industrie 4.0 and to set strategic goals for the coming years. For example, Plattform Industrie 4.0 aims to swiftly advance the development of the international data space for Industrie 4.0 applications by making use of its strong network and by working in close cooperation with the GAIA-X project. Using this data room as a starting point, efforts to develop strategies for sustainable, carbon-neutral production are also to be moved forward.

Declared State Secretary Ulrich Nußbaum:

"We now need to consistently move towards a digitalised and data-driven economy. This means making full use of Germany's and Europe's innovation potential. We are doing everything we can to speed up this process. GAIA-X is an important element in implementing Industrie 4.0. The IPCEI Industrial Cloud, which is currently being developed, will provide us with state-of-the-art, high-performance and real-time cloud edge infrastructure that will open up unexpected new opportunities for the industrial sector. We will invest up to €1.5 billion in our funding programme for forward-looking investment for the automotive industry by the end of 2024 – a programme that will also promote the wider roll-out of Industrie 4.0."

Said Dr Michael Meister, Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Ministry of Education and Research:

"Industrie 4.0 is a good example showing what can be achieved when policymakers, researchers, business representatives and the social partners are working together in a spirit of trust. We have initiated a global trend and are ahead of our global competitors in terms of implementing Industrie 4.0. The platform continues to be an engine for enhancing Industrie 4.0, not least in the areas of B2B data exchange, data-based business models and sustainable and carbon-neutral production. GAIA-X is a very important example here. The platform also provides us with important impetus as we develop the new 'Future of Value Added' research programme."

Background:

Plattform Industrie 4.0 is the central network for driving forward the digital transformation in Germany’s manufacturing sector. With more than 350 stakeholders representing more than 150 organisations, it brings together the political sphere with industry, science, the unions, and associations in a joint effort. The platform is one of the largest international and national networks of its kind and helps German companies implement Industrie 4.0 solutions, not least by making them aware of existing Industrie 4.0 examples in other companies and by implementing these on a wider scale. It also provides specific recommendations for action, information about support mechanisms and testing environments across more than 200 expert publications, thus providing important impetus. The many international partnerships in which the platform is involved illustrate its strong role in the international debate on Industrie 4.0.

Industrie 4.0 – Made in Germany is a globally renowned brand. Important basic knowledge on the standardisation of interconnection and digitalisation services has been developed in Germany by Plattform Industrie 4.0. Maybe the most prominent example of this is the digital twin – a virtual representation of real-world objects. Germany's pioneering work on Industrie 4.0 has has helped it establish itself as a leading provider and user of Industrie 4.0 products and services. This has made both German and European industry more resilient and competitive.

In order to maintain this position on Industrie 4.0, Plattform Industrie 4.0 will now swiftly advance the development of the international data space for Industrie 4.0 applications by making use of its strong network and by working in close cooperation with the GAIA-X project. Using this data room as a starting point, efforts to develop strategies for sustainable, carbon-neutral production are also to be moved forward.
