The Vodafone Group has informed the Federal Government and the Saxon state government that it will set up a development centre for 5G, 6G and automotives in Dresden. The Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy, Peter Altmaier, and the Minister-President of the Free State of Saxony, Michael Kretschmer, welcome this decision and believe that it will boost Germany as a high-tech location and strengthen Dresden’s position as a hub for innovation.

Minister Altmaier said: "I am very pleased that Vodafone has decided to set up a new development centre for 5G, 6G and automotives in Dresden. I sincerely congratulate Saxony on this. This decision shows once again how attractive Dresden and Saxony are as a region for innovation. It underscores that Germany is, and will remain, a hub for high-tech. 5G and 6G are technologies of the future that are fundamental for continuing the digitisation of industry, especially the automotive sector which is of major importance for the German economy. I am confident that this project will provide a boost for the entire region and create sustainable jobs."

Minister-President Kretschmer said: "It is excellent news that Vodafone will set up a research and development centre in Saxony – in Dresden. In Germany, and perhaps even Europe, Dresden is the perfect location for setting up such a centre as it boasts a research and business infrastructure that is all focussed on technology development. We are pleased that our strengths were recognised in the intensive selection process. The Saxon state government and the city of Dresden have come together in a joint project group to support the project. Vodafone will find the right research and industry partners in Saxony to become fast and successful in developing the communication of the future. Digitisation and mobile communication based on 5G and 6G will influence our lives more and more strongly. Based on the favourable environment we have in Saxony, which will be even further improved by Vodafone establishing a development centre here, we can actively shape this development."
