On 1 June 2021, Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy Peter Altmaier joined his counterparts in a virtual meeting of the OECD Ministerial Council dedicated to the inauguration of Mathias Cormann (Australia) as Secretary-General and to sharing views on the priorities for cooperation within the OECD. Mathias Cormann is succeeding Angel Gurría (Mexico), who had been at the helm of the organisation for the past 15 years.

Says Federal Minister Altmaier: “I would like to congratulate OECD Secretary-General Mathias Cormann on his new responsibilities and am very much looking forward to our cooperation. Taking over from his predecessor Angel Gurría, Mr Cormann is in charge of an international organisation that distinguishes itself by its wealth of expertise and is a supporter of key multilateral negotiation processes, including some within the G7 and the G20. On behalf of the Federal Government and also in a personal capacity, I would like to thank Angel Gurría for his strong commitment and the personal dedication he has brought to the OECD in his 15 years in office.”

The OECD Ministerial Council is the topmost decision-making body of the OECD. The OECD Secretary-General is appointed by the member states for a period of five years.
