The EU today decided to extend the steel safeguard measures beyond 30 June 2021 for another three years until 30 June 2024.

The Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy Peter Altmaier said:
"Today's decision to extend the steel safeguard measures are an important step to secure jobs in the steel industry in the long term. This step was inevitable given the ongoing excess capacity on the world market. Up until the very last moment we did our best to secure the majority necessary within the EU Member States."

Today, the EU decided to extend the safeguard measures against steel imports. These measures were introduced in 2018 as a response to the US decision on import tariffs for steel and aluminium under Section 232 and out of concerns of trade diversions to the EU market. Today, the EU decided to extend its safeguard measures for steel beyond 30 June 2021 for three more years until 30 June 2024.
