State Secretary Feicht attends EU Energy Council meeting in Luxembourg

Andreas Feicht, State Secretary responsible for energy matters, will be attending an extraordinary Council of energy ministers in Luxembourg today on behalf of the German Federal Government and the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy. The energy ministers of the EU Member States will be discussing the current energy price trends in the EU and worldwide. The focus of today’s meeting will also be on the Commission communication on energy prices, which was published on 13 October 2021, and the "toolbox" outlined in it. Energy ministers will be engaged in an in-depth debate to follow up on the discussions of the European Council on 21-22 October.

Prior to the meeting, State Secretary Feicht said:

"I expect constructive talks on the current situation on the energy markets today. The European Commission’s 'toolbox' is a good basis showing the Member States ways to relieve the burden on consumers and businesses in compliance with applicable EU rules. We agree with the European Commission that a functioning and strong internal market is important to ensure stable energy prices in the EU in the medium and long term. It is also important for us to press forward with the negotiations on the 'Fit-for-55 package'. An accelerated expansion of the use of renewable energy and greater energy efficiency will reduce the EU’s dependency on imports and at the same time make a valuable contribution to the decarbonisation of our economies."
