Cover of the report Open Data for Electricity Modeling

This report is the first of a series of reports on open electricity system modelling which form part of the project “Open Source Energiewende”. It discusses open input data which is freely accessible and usable.

Open electricity system modelling – using open data in open-source models to produce open results – comes with a range of potential benefits: it can increase the quality of research and policy advice, spur productivity by allowing reuse, and it can create credibility and legitimacy in the policy discourse through greater transparency. In addition, open modelling makes high-quality data and planning tools accessible to researchers and institutions lacking the funds for commercial alternatives. Finally, ethical considerations suggest that research financed with public money should be public.
