The OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises are recommendations by adhering countries to multinational enterprises on responsible business conduct in a global context. Their goal of is to encourage the positive contribution which companies can make to economic, social and environmental progress and minimize negative impacts that may arise from their operations, products or services. They contain established principles of responsible business conduct in the areas of disclosure, human rights, employment, environment, anti-corruption, consumer interests, science, technology and innovation, competition and taxation.

All 51 Adherents set up National Contact Points (NCPs) to promote the effective implementation of the OECD Guidelines. Besides promotion of the Guidelines, the NCPs also serve as non-judicial grievance mechanisms. The OECD Guidelines are legally not binding. Yet, the Federal Government expects that German companies and companies operating from Germany abide by the principles set out in the Guidelines and participate constructively in complaints processes against them at the German NCP.
