The BLUEPOWER project was about the development of an electric drive for waste collection vehicles and road sweepers, powered by fuel cells supplemented with batteries to boost performance. During its development and test phases, the project was to establish whether the vehicle can be built in serial production, without grave losses of payload and useful volume. The project has laid the necessary basis for the serial production of zero-emissions commercial and special-purpose vehicles. Since the successful completion of the project, the manufacturer has been able to offer zero-emissions waste collection vehicles and road sweepers and thus make a major contribution to improving air quality, especially in inner cities. The approx. €0.52 million in funding provided by the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport has made it possible to bring the vehicle from the development stage to market entry. The follow-up funding that is being provided to promote the use of these vehicles in municipalities helps cut greenhouse gas emissions and therefore makes a contribution to our climate targets.
