The basic research projects on hydrogen funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research are designed to help the hydrogen technologies of tomorrow and beyond make the leap from laboratory to commercial viability. These projects seek answers to fundamental questions on hydrogen economy and lay scientific foundation for new products and applications in five thematic areas:

  1. Hydrogen production
  2. Hydrogen storage
  3. Hydrogen transport
  4. Hydrogen use
  5. Cross-thematic hydrogen research

The AEMready project, for example is developing precious metal-free AEM electrolysis, H2Meer investigates the production of hydrogen from seawater, CORAL-HD aims at improving the service life of fuel cells in commercial vehicles and CarbonCycleMeOH analyses how new basic chemicals can be produced from waste gases of a chemical plant using hydrogen.

The basic research hydrogen projects are the result of a competition for ideas that consisted of several application rounds. From December 2020 to March 2021, 16 projects were launched as part of the first application round. The second round included a further 20 projects that started between October 2021 and October 2022.The third and fourth round consisted of 170 sketches that are presently being reviewed. A total of 317 project sketches have been submitted
