The Green Hydrogen Potential Atlas of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research investigates the potential for the production and export of green hydrogen for over 30 countries in Western, Southern and Eastern Africa. The aim is to create an interactive map showing the

  • available renewable energy and water resources
  • available areas for the production of green hydrogen
  • cost efficiency of green hydrogen production
  • local energy demand and infrastructure, and
  • social and socio-political conditions

Initial data is already available for the 15 member states of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). The results of this atlas are the basis for projects to demonstrate the production and export of green hydrogen in Africa. In order to ensure that Skilled workforce is available for this, a Master's degree training programme on green hydrogen technologies has been launched in September 2021 in West Africa. The Jülich Research Centre, RWTH Aachen University and the West African Climate Competence Centre WASCAL are involved in the project. 60 students from the 15 countries of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) are enrolled for the two-year Master's programme in West Africa and Germany.
