The call allows the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport to promote market activation and the ramp-up of climate-friendly alternatively fuelled rolling stock in passenger and freight transport.

  • Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV)
  • Deadline: 31 August 2022

The call is being issued as part of the ‘guideline for the funding of alternatively fuelled rolling stock’ which has allowed the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV) to promote market activation and the ramp-up of alternatively fuelled rolling stock since February 2021. Alternative propulsion systems are one of the four pillars of the railway electrification programme, which aims at raising the proportion of electrified railway capacity in passenger and freight transport.

The technologies focused on in the call are,

  • for local passenger rail services, battery-electric and fuel cell-based railcars,
  • for rail freight, hybrid propulsion systems (e.g. dual-mode and battery-electric hybrid technology).

Funding is also available for the deployment of charging and refuelling infrastructure for alternatively fuelled rolling stock and electrolysis plants for generating hydrogen, and for conducting studies on possible applications in the transport network.
