In the HyPerformer category of the ‘Hyland – hydrogen regions in Germany’ competition, funding is being awarded to regional project consortia that have already developed detailed strategies for the use of hydrogen technology and are now seeking to roll out the technology.

  • Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV)
  • Deadline: 30 September to 31 January 2023

The funding provided under HyPerformer is to promote the implementation of integrated strategies focusing on mobility, thus helping build a regional hydrogen economy. Including other sectors in the strategy (such as the industrial sector or heat) can be an important part of the strategy and help increase the efficiency and viability of installations.

The funding provided under HyPerformer helps stakeholders in the regions develop coherent hydrogen projects for the transport sector and implement these. The projects’ objective is to create a hydrogen economy in the region that is as integrated as possible (i.e. regional production, logistics and use of hydrogen). In this context, the term ‘region’ refers to a geographical area characterised by joint economic structures and prospects where a local hydrogen economy is to be created through the use of synergies. According to this definition, a region can span several Länder or even include parts of neighbouring EU Member States.

Regions competing in the HyPerformer category need to have mature individual projects which have been put into an overall regional strategy and which are now being put into practice using the funding.

The ‘Hyland – hydrogen regions in Germany’ is a competition that was launched by the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV) in 2019, which is now entering the second round. The objective is to identify and provide funding for the most innovative and promising regional strategies. In the first round of the HyLand programme, 25 regions received funding for the establishment of a hydrogen economy across three categories, namely HyStarter, HyExperts and HyPerformer. In the second round, a further 30 regions have thus far been selected in the HyStarter and HyExperts categories.
