The Helmholtz cluster for a sustainable and infrastructure-compatible hydrogen economy (HC-H2) has been designed as a flagship for science and technology. It seeks to conduct practice-related research and thus speed up the deployment of a sustainable hydrogen economy and, more specifically, facilitate structural change in the Rhenish mining area. The scientific and organisational activities are pooled at the Institute for a Sustainable Hydrogen Economy (INW) at Forschungszentrum Jülich.

Hydrogen demonstration projects help combine research activities and practical testing and are to foster knowledge and technological transfer, thus working towards the establishment of a regional innovation cluster. The objective is to turn the Rhenish mining area into an innovative hydrogen demonstration region, spurring new entrepreneurial activity and creating lasting value.

The success of the hydrogen demonstration region hinges on the participation of all the relevant stakeholders in the Rhenish mining area. This is why the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) is calling upon businesses, research institutes and other public and private-sector operators to submit proposals for hydrogen demonstration projects in the Rhenish mining area.
