This year, the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action is taking part in the Work4Germany programme, which was launched on 29 August 2023, with five exciting projects focusing on a modern public sector and the digital economy. The fellowship programme, which is being run by the Federal Government’s DigitalService, is bringing together transformation experts from the digital economy with employees of the Federal Ministries. For six months, the teams will work on cross-disciplinary challenges, redesign workflows and focus on joint user-centred and digital working methods. The programme started with three orientation days, allowing the project managers and fellows to get to know one another and engage in networking.

In this programme year, five projects focusing on a modern public sector and the digital economy will be worked on in the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action. These are:

4D: Due Diligence Digital Denken (Due Diligence Digital Thinking)

The ‘4D: Due Diligence Digital Denken’ project is to help companies implement their supply chain-related due diligence duties in a way that is as unbureaucratic, practice-oriented and effective as possible.

Joint establishment of the data institute

As set out in the Coalition Agreement, the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action and the Federal Ministry of the Interior and Community have been charged with the establishment of a data institute, which will improve data availability and standardisation and implement trustee models and the relevant licences. During the concept phase of the data institute’s establishment, an agile and iterative approach will be used in order to adapt the data institute to the needs of stakeholders and future data users. As part of the fellowship, the project seeks to provide support for the iterative and use case-based founding process of the data institute.

NKI One-Stop-Shop

The project is to merge the application and project management processes used for the funding programmes under the National Climate Initiative (NKI) and other platforms in an effective and user-friendly manner and make them accessible in one place for applicants and beneficiaries of the NKI. The ultimate goal is to make it easier for applicants to apply, manage projects and submit proof-of-use documents.

Digitally redesigned HR processes

The fourth project is about streamlining and speeding up HR processes; by redesigning processes, the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action wants to create a ‘template’ that can be used widely and will thus give a boost to digitisation.

A strategic vision for digital work

In order to take an even more targeted approach to in-house measures promoting the digital transformation of the Ministry, the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action is currently devising an internal digitisation strategy and a monitoring process for assessing and implementing the measures which have been trialled. The goal is to create a framework and an efficient process that will allow the use of modern and future-oriented working methods at the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action.
